YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Lander University Saturday (April 1) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 31-7 overall and 11-5 in the conference after defeating the Bearcats 3-2 and 2-0 while the Lander fell to 15-25 and 5-11. Young Harris returns to action Sunday (April 2) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field as they host the University of South Carolina Aiken in a 2 p.m. PBC doubleheader.
With the first game tied at 2 in the bottom of the seventh, Kelsey Nix sent the 3-2 pitch, one-out offering from McKenzi Ferguson (10-11) over the left-center field wall for the game-winning homer. It was her fourth of the season.
Young Harris scored first in the second inning off an RBI groundout by Georgia Webb. The Bearcats would score single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1Â lead. Murphy Davis drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 2.
Hannah Harrison and Chandler Stooksbury led the team with two hits. Jeanie Perrucci, Biz Walters, Jill Torres, Davis, and Nix each had one hit.
Perrucci (14-3) earned the win for Young Harris, pitching a complete game, scattering six hits, allowing two runs and striking out four.
The two teams were neck and neck in game two, with no runs being scored until the bottom of the sixth inning. Harrison singled through the right side to score the first run of the game for either team. Grace Botti added an insurance run sacrifice fly to center field.
Young Harris had six hits in the nightcap with Davis leading the way with two. Walters, Torres, Harrison and Stooksbury picked up a hit each in game two.
Nikkie Kovalsky (16-4) pitched a complete game shut out for Young Harris, scattering seven hits and striking out four.
Brianna Surrento (3-11) earned the loss for Lander, giving up two runs on six hits over six innings.
