YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Shorter University Wednesday (March 22) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 25-7 after defeating the Hawks by scores of 3-1 and 3-2, while the Hawks fell to 21-12. Young Harris travels to Augusta, Georgia. to take on Augusta University in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday (March 25) at 2 p.m.
Young Harris jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener.
Jeanie Perrucci scored the first run as part of a double steal.
Murphy Davis followed with run-scoring single through the left side.
After the Hawks got a run back on an unearned run in the fifth, Perrucci added an insurance run in the fifth as she came around to score on a single to center by
Jill Torres.
Perrucci and Torres led the team with two hits, while
Biz Walters and Davis each had one.
Perrucci (10-3) earned the win going 4 2/3 innings allowing five hits, one run (unearned) and striking out two.
Nikkie Kovalsky earned her third save of the season after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh.
Hannah Draper (6-5) got the loss for the Hawks going 4 2/3 innings allowing six hits and three runs.
Kelsey Nix's two-out single through the left side in the bottom of the seventh score Davis with the winning run in the nightcap.
Shorter took an early lead in game two off a Young Harris throwing error in the top of the first. Young Harris tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the third off a sacrifice fly by
Hannah Harrison. The Mountain Lions would take the lead 2-1 in the fourth via an RBI single by Walters. Shorter tied the game at 2 in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly of its own.
Nix led the Mountain Lions in game two with two hits. Perrucci, Walters, and
Chandler Stooksbury collected one apiece.
Kennedy Kotula (1-0) picked up her first win of the season throwing two innings of scoreless relief, only allowing one hit. Kalei Clark (7-3) took the loss for the Hawks after 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four hits and two earned runs.
