JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. | Carson-Newman University won a pair of one-run games in its softball doubleheader sweep of Young Harris College Thursday (March 16) afternoon.
The Eagles won the opener 4-3 before claiming a 3-2 decision in the nightcap.
Carson-Newman improved to 19-7, while the Mountain Lions fell to 19-7. Young Harris steps back into Peach Belt Conference action with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Francis Marion University Saturday (March 18) in Florence, South Carolina.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opener before Young Harris scored twice in the third on a
Grace Botti single to right field. Carson-Newman tied the game in the fourth with a run before taking a 4-2 lead after Cheyenne Boles connected on a two-run homer off YHC hurler
Nikkie Kovalsky (11-4) down the left field line in the sixth.
Young Harris got a run back in the seventh as
Murphy Davis smacked a solo home run to center field. It was her first of the season. The Mountain Lions had the tying run on base after Botti singled to center, but Carson-Newman pitcher Laci Rinus (10-3) was able to get the final out for the win.
The Mountain Lions outhit the Eagles 10-5 in the opener, but stranded nine runners.
Jeanie Perrucci, Davis, Botti and
Jill Torres each collected two hits, with Perrucci and Torres registering a double apiece.
The Eagles open up a 3-0 lead in the nightcap after Ashlyn Cooper hit a solo home run off Perrucci (8-3) right-center field in the fifth inning. Young Harris got within a run as they scored twice in the sixth on
Jordie Holt's single up the middle.
The Mountain Lions could only muster three hits in game two off Eagle pitcher Alli Webster (9-4). Holt had two of the hits as she added a double in the fifth inning. Botti accounted for the other YHC hit.
