PEMBROKE, N.C. | Young Harris College converted eight University of North Carolina at Pembroke errors into 10 unearned runs as the Mountain Lions swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from the Braves Sunday (March 19) afternoon at LRA Field.
The Mountain Lions took a 4-0 win in the opener, before run-ruling UNC Pembroke 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
Young Harris improved to 21-7 overall and to 3-5 in the Peach Belt, while the Braves fell to 17-17 and 2-9. Young Harris will travel to Florence, South Carolina, Monday (March 20) for a 3 p.m. PBC doubleheader against Francis Marion University.
Jeanie Perrucci and
Nikkie Kovalsky combined for the shutout in the opener. Perrucci went to 9-3 on the season as she allowed three hits over five innings, while Kovalsky earned her second save with two scoreless innings of relief.
The Mountain Lions took advantage of an UNCPÂ throwing error for their run in the first. Perrucci stole home for the second run in the third inning. Young Harris made it 3-0 in the fourth as they added another run on a passed ball.
Jill Torres closed out the scoring in the seventh on a RBI single back up the middle.
Young Harris tallied five hits by five different players -
Biz Walters, Torres,
Murphy Davis,
Grace Botti and
Hannah Harrison - in the opener. Davis had the lone extra-base hit for the Mountain Lions with her leadoff double to right-center field in the fourth inning.
The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the second game when Davis hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Young Harris ended the game early as they combined five hits and four errors into a seven-run fifth inning. Davis had an RBI single to right and
Georgia Webb drove in two more with her single up the middle.
Kovalsky scattered five hits and struck out four in game two to improve to 12-4.Â
The Mountain Lions banged out 10 hits - all singles - in the nightcap with Walters leading the way with three. Webb also had a multi-hit game for Young Harris with two.Â
