MONTEVALLO, Ala. | Young Harris College and the University of Montevallo split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Sunday (March 12) afternoon at Orr Park.
The Mountain Lions, who won game two 5-1, improved to 19-5 overall and to 1-5 in the Peach Belt, while the Falcons, who won the opener 4-3, fell to 12-11 and 3-2.Â
Young Harris greeted Montevallo starter Abbey Pratt (6-5) with four runs in the first inning of game two.
Jill Torres started the scoring with a bases-loaded walk before
Grace Botti cleared the bases with a double down the left field line. The Mountain Lions added a run in the fifth on a RBI single through the left side from
Jeanie Perrucci to take a 5-0 lead.
Nikkie Kovalsky improved to 11-3 as she scattered five hits and struck out nine.
Perrucci and
Georgia Webb each collected two hits as the Mountain Lions had eight in the win.
Montevallo rallied for the win in the opener as the Falcons got two-run home runs from Lauren Van Steenwyk - in the fifth - and Marisa Sosa - in the sixth - off Perrucci (8-2). Young Harris had taken a 1-0 lead in first on
Hannah Harrison's RBI single. The Mountain Lions added a run in the fifth on Torres' leadoff homer to center field. It was her second long ball of the year. Harrison drove in another run in the seventh with an infield single to get YHC within a run at 4-3, but Pratt got the final out to save the game for Montevallo starter Jocelyn Rivera (6-4).
Young Harris banged out seven hits in game one. Perrucci and Harrison led the way with two apiece.
