Mountain Lions sweep doubleheader from Warhawks

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Young Harris College ruined Senior Day for the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team as the Mountain Lions swept a non-conference doubleheader Saturday (March 11) afternoon at the AUM Softball Complex.

The Mountain Lions, who improved to 18-4, won the opener 9-3 and rallied for a run in the sixth and seventh innings of game two to register a 5-3 decision. Young Harris steps back into Peach Belt Conference action Sunday (March 12) with a 1 p.m. Central time doubleheader against the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama. AUM fell to 14-11.

Young Harris scored five runs in the third inning of the opener to take a 5-1 lead. Biz Walters drove in the first run on an infield single before Hannah Harrison  walked with the bases loaded. Murphy Davis added a two-run double to right-center and Lauren Daniel drew another bases-loaded walk.

The Warhawks got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Mountain Lions put the game out of reach with a four-run seventh. Grace Botti had the big hit with a bases-clearing double to right-center and Georgia Webb had a run-scoring infield single.

Jeanie Perrucci had two of the nine hits that the Mountain Lions collected in game one.

Nikkie Kovalsky (10-3), who got the decision in both games, earned the win in the opener, allowing just one run in five innings of relief.

With the nightcap tied at 3 after five innings, Young Harris reclaimed the lead at 4-3 after Davis, who had starting the inning with a double down the left field line, scored on a passed ball in the sixth. The Mountain Lions added an insurance run in the seventh when Botti coaxed a bases-loaded walk.

Botti had given YHC an early 2-0 lead in the second when she smacked a two-run homer to left field. It was her first long ball of the season. Perrucci added a RBI single to right center in the inning.

The Mountain Lions only had three hits in game two, but took advantage of 10 walks issued by the Warhawk pitching corps.

Kovalsky earned the win in game two with two scoreless innings of relief as she struck out three.
