YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Cole Fanzo scored with 2:28 remaining in overtime to give Catawba College a 10-9 decision over Young Harris College in a non-conference men's lacrosse match on a rainy Tuesday (Feb. 7) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Catawba Indians improved to 1-0, while the Mountain Lions, who were only playing their second overtime contest in the program's history, fell to 0-1. Young Harris will travel to Wingate, North Carolina, for a 4 p.m. match Thursday (Feb. 9) against Wingate University.
The match see-sawed back and forth between the two teams. Catawba took a 4-0 lead after the first quarter as Trevor Bellotte scored twice and Colin Beecham and Fanzo found the back of the net once. The second quarter was the exact opposite as the Mountain Lions held the Catawba Indians off the scoreboard as they scored five times - three off the stick of
Garrett Blake - to take a 5-4 lead at the half.
Matty Ledon and
Sam Gasta accounted for the other YHC goals.
It was more of the same in the second half as neither team enjoyed more than a two-goal advantage the rest of the way. Young Harris took a 9-8 lead on a
Duncan Jackson goal off a
Bevan Pate assist to take a 9-8 lead with 9:56 remaining in regulation; however Dalton Cook responded with an equalizer 86 seconds later to force the extra period.
Fanzo, who led Catawba with four scores, took a pass from Chase Scott and was able to put the ball into the left side of the net for the win.
Blake led the Mountain Lions with three goals, while Ledon added two more. Gasta, Pate,
Chandler Bradley and Jackson each scored one. Gasta and Pate also distributed two assists each.
Zach Stephenson, who won six faceoffs for the Mountain Lions, led Young Harris with five grounds balls.
Zac Barrett, who had seven faceoff wins,
Mason King and
Bruce Silk each scooped up four ground balls. King picked up nine saves between the pipes for YHC.
Ryan Applegate recorded 15 saves for the Catawba Indians.
