YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The University of Montevallo used a strong fourth quarter to record a 58-48 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over Young Harris College Monday (Feb. 6) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Falcons improved to 5-17 overall and to 2-13 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 8-13 and 4-10. Young Harris travels to Milledgeville, Georgia, Saturday (Feb. 11) for a 1:30 p.m. Peach Belt matinee against Georgia College.
The Mountain Lions scored the final eight point of the first quarter to take a 15-9 lead and extended the lead to as many as eight points (21-13) on a jumper by
Briana Bell with 5:50 remaining in the second quarter. The Falcons closed to within two points (25-23) at the half as Montevallo outscored Young Harris 10-2 the rest of the quarter.
YHC pushed its lead back to six points (35-29) on a Bell jumper with 4:18 left in the third quarter, but the Falcons took the lead for good at 39-38 with 7:15 remaining in the contest on a Albanellys Perez layup. That was part of a 13-2 run by Montevallo as took a 49-41 lead on an Ashley Dunstan layup with 2:13 left. Young Harris, which only made three field goals in the final quater, Â trimmed the deficit to four (50-46) on a Bell three-pointer with 90 seconds left, but Montevallo held the Mountain Lions at bay as they made six of eight free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Bell led the Mountain Lions with 15 points, while
Jenny Vernet had a double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jada Williams and
Meredith Tarver each scored six points. Williams also grabbed 11 rebounds, while Tarver had 10.
Dunstan led Montevallo with 25 points and seven rebounds.
