Mountain Lions open season with sweep of Royals

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The Young Harris College softball team started the 2017 season with a doubleheader sweep of Queens University of Charlotte Saturday (Feb. 4) evening  on the first day of the Bobcat Kickoff Tournament hosted by Georgia College.

Young Harris won the opener 4-0 before claiming the nightcap with an 11-3 decision in five innings.

Young Harris improved to 2-0 and will face Albany State University in a noon doubleheader Sunday (Feb. 5) on the final day of the tournament. The Royals fell to 0-2.

Jeanie Perrucci (1-0) tossed a three-hit shutout as she struck out 15. The 15 strikeouts set a new College record (NCAA era), surpassing the previous record of 13 set by Katie-Jo Gentry against West Liberty University in 2012.

The Mountain Lions scored a run in the fifth on a Georgia Webb RBI double. YHC added three insurance runs an inning later as Murphy Davis drove in a run on a grounder and Kelsey Nix stroked a two-run single.

Hannah Harrison led Young Harris with two hits.

Perrucci ignited the offense in game two as she collected four hits - two were triples - and drove in three runs for Young Harris, which scored in every inning but the fourth. Harrison had two hits again for the Mountain Lions in the nightcap, while Georgia Webb and Chandler Stooksbury each drove in two runs and Davis also drove in a run. Harrison and Stooksbury also clubbed doubles for YHC, which had 11 hits in game two.

Nikkie Kovalsky (1-0) struck out five as she picked up the win in the circle.
