YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Young Harris College softball team ran their record to 13-0 on a blustery Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field after sweeping a doubleheader from Auburn University at Montgomery.
The Mountain Lions won the opener 4-3 as they scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before using a four-run second inning in the nightcap to take a 5-3 decision in game two.
AUM fell to 7-6 overall. The Mountain Lions wrap up play at the YHC Softball Tournament Sunday (Feb. 25) with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Brevard College.
With the Warhawks holding a 3-1 lead entering into the bottom of the seventh in game one,
Hannah Harrison and
Murphy Davis sandwiched an out with infield singles.
Jill Torres stroked a double down the right field line to score Harrison. Torres got caught in a rundown between second and third base that allowed Davis to come all the way around to tie the game at 3. On the play, Kaylin Finch's throw trying to get Davis out at home, got away from the catcher allowing Torres to score the deciding run.
Davis had three of the seven hits that the Mountain Lions had in game one.
Jeanie Perrucci (7-0) scattered four hits and struck out four in the complete game effort.
In the second game, the Mountain Lions broke open the game with a four-run second.
Jill Torres had an RBI double to left center while Perrucci added a run-scoring single,
Biz Walters added a two-run to right-center field as Young Harris led 4-0. AUM got three runs back in the top of the fourth inning, but Young Harris added an insurance run in the sixth on
Chandler Stooksbury's RBI single through the left side.
Nikkie Kovalsky (6-0) struck out nine in the win for the Mountain Lions.
Stooksbury had two hits to lead YHC in the second game.
