YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College opened play at the YHC Softball Tournament Friday (Feb. 24) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field with a 6-1 victory over Anderson (S.C.) University.
The Mountain Lions improved to 11-0 and will face Auburn University at Montgomery in a noon doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 25) on day two of the three-day event. The Trojans slipped to 14-5.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the third as the Mountain Lions took advantage of a Trojan error. Jeanie Perrucci started the rally with a single to left and moved over a base on the throwing error. A sacrifice bunt from Biz Walters moved her to third and she scored on Hannah Harrison's single to left.
The Mountain Lions added another run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to open up a 6-0 cushion. Murphy Davis led off the fourth with a double to right-center and scored on Jill Torres' single down the right field line. Kelsey Nix drew a bases-loaded in the sixth and Chandler Stooksbury added a run-scoring single.
Davis and Harrison led the YHC nine-hit attack with two hits apiece.
Perrucci scattered three hits and struck out 10 in the complete-game effort as she improved to 6-0 in the circle.
