YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Marcellus Roberts scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as five Young Harris College men's basketball players finished in double figures as the Mountain Lions soared past the University of North Georgia 95-78 in front of a full house Wednesday (Feb. 22) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
Both the Mountain Lions and Nighthawks finished with 11-8 records in the Peach Belt Conference's West Division and finished in a five-way tie for first place along with Clayton State University, University of Montevallo and Columbus State University.
It was the first time since the 2007 women's basketball season that a division had finished in a five-way tie for first place. After all tiebreakers were applied, the Mountain Lions came out on the short end and didn't earn one of the four berths from the West for the PBC Tournament that starts Saturday (Feb. 25) at campus sites. Clayton State earned the top seed from the West, and was followed by Columbus State, North Georgia and Montevallo. Young Harris finished the season on a four-game win streak and finished with a 17-11 overall mark.
Young Harris, which led for all but 51 seconds in the game, used a 23-6 run over a six-minute stretch in the later stages of the first half to take a 51-32 lead with 43 seconds remaining on two
C.J. Wilson free throws. Roberts, who scored 17 of his points in the opening 20 minutes, scored eight points during the decisive run, while
Ben Waterhouse added five more. Roberts went 10-of-14 from the floor.
The Mountain Lions extended their lead to as many as 30 points (85-55) in the second half. Young Harris, which outscored the Nighthawks 21-4 in second chance points, outrebounded North Georgia 57-38.Â
Wilson finished the game with 18 points, while Waterhouse had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Corey Nelson, who went 7-of-11 from the floor, added 15 points, while
J.B. Charles had a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Bjorn Walker also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Mountain Lions.
The game marked the final one in a YHC uniform for five Mountain Lions - Wilson, Walker, Roberts,
Marques McKoy and
Darrius Sizemore.
