Young Harris sails by Vikings in doubleheader sweep

PEMBROKE, N.C. | Young Harris College tossed a pair of one hitters as the Mountain Lions sailed past Elizabeth City State University in a softball doubleheader sweep Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon at LRA Field.

With the sweep, the Mountain Lions improved to 10-0, while the Vikings fell to 0-2. Young Harris returns to action Friday (Feb. 24) when they open play at the YHC Softball Tournament with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Anderson (S.C.) University at E.D. Rivers Field.

Jeanie Perrucci only faced one batter over the minimum in the opener as she improved to 5-0 as the Mountain Lions recorded a 19-1 win in five innings. Perrucci struck out 14 in the victory.

The Mountain Lions set a new school record for runs in a game with their 24-0 shutout in five innings, surpassing the previous record of 23 runs scored against Tennessee Temple University in 2012. Nikkie Kovalsky improved to 5-0 as she also tossed a one hitter as she struck out nine, facing just two batters over the minimum.

Biz Walters led the Mountain Lions with three hits, while Perrucci, Hannah Harrison, Jill Torres, Lauren Daniel and Kennedy Kotula had two hits apiece. Rachel Benson had a two-run inside-the-park homer for the Mountain Lions, while Torres drove in five. Harrison drove in four runs, while Kotula added two RBI.

In the nightcap, Murphy Davis led Young Harris with three hits, while Perrucci, Torres and Aubrey Crowell had two hits each as the seven of the 15 hits for Mountain Lions went for extra bases. Walters and Harrison each drove in two runs.
