YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from North Greenville University Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
Young Harris improved to 8-0, while the Crusaders fell to 5-5. The Mountain Lions return to action Saturday (Feb. 18) on the road against Elizabeth City State University in Pembroke, N.C.
The Crusaders jump to an early 2-0 lead in the first on Morgan Herlong's double. The Mountain Lions scored one run each in the second and third innings to tie the game the game at 2 as they took advantage of NGU errors for unearned runs.
Young Harris took the lead in the fourth as they scored three runs. The Mountain Lions got an RBI single by
Biz Walters followed by a sacrifice fly by
Grace Botti. They took a 5-2 lead on another Crusader error.
Jeanie Perrucci (4-0) earned the complete-game win with five strikeouts and one earned run.
Walters led the Mountain Lions with three hits in the opener.
North Greenville used the long ball to open to 4-0 lead in the nightcap after two innings. Shayna led off the game with a home run to left field while Celsea Rivers added a three-run blast to center an inning later.
Young Harris answered back with four runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 4. Walter drove in the first run on a grounder before
Hannah Harrison drove in another run on a single. Botti drew a bases-loaded walk before
Murphy Davis drove in the final run on a ground out.
The Mountain Lions took the lead for good at 6-4 in the fourth as
Georgia Webb had a two-run triple to left field. Young Harris added two more insurance runs an inning later as Botti had a RBI single while
Jill Torres coaxed a bases-loaded walk,
Nikkie Kovalsky (4-0) earned the complete-game win in game two, scattering 10 hits and had three strikeouts.
Walters, Harrison and Torres accounted for two hits each in the Mountain Lions' 11-hit attack.
