AMERICUS, Ga. | Brandon Price hit two free throws with 3.9 seconds remaining to give Georgia Southwestern State University a 66-65 Peach Belt Conference men's basketball victory over Young Harris College Wednesday (Feb. 1) evening at the Storm Dome.
The Hurricanes improved to 7-13 overall and to 5-8 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions slipped to 13-8 overall and fell into a second-place tie in the PBC West Division with the University of North Georgia with a 7-5 league ledger. YHC travels to Columbus, Georgia, for 3:30 p.m. contest against Columbus State University, who leads PBC West.
Georgia Southwestern stormed out to an early 16-point lead (23-7) after Devin Watson connected on a jumper with 11:14 remaining in the first half. The Mountain Lions got back into the game used a 20-8 run to trim the deficit down to four points (31-27) after a layup by
C.J. Wilson with 3:40 left in the half.
The Mountain Lions, who trailed 34-31 at the half, took their first lead of the game at 35-34 on two
Marques McKoy free throws with 18:49 remaining. The Mountain Lions extended their lead to six points (42-36) after an old-fashioned three-point play by
Corey Nelson two minutes later, The Hurricanes responded with a 20-6 run to open up a 56-48 lead on a three-pointer from Cameron Dozier with 11:51 to go.
Young Harris scored seven unanswered points to get within a point (56-55) over the next four minutes to get back in the contest. Young Harris regained the lead at 61-60 on a Wilson layup with 3:56 left. A
Ben Waterhouse jumper gave the Mountain Lions a 65-62 lead with 2:15 to play, but Price hit two free throws to pull within a point.
After Young Harris turned the ball over on its next possession, Price was fouled as he was taking the inbounds pass underneath the GSW basket with 3.9 seconds remaining. Price then hit both ends of the one-and-one free throws to give the Hurricanes a 66-65 lead. YHC had one final chance to win the game, but turned the ball over at midcourt.
McKoy led the Mountain Lions with 14 points and 15 rebounds, while
Bjorn Walker added 13 points. Waterhouse and
J.B. Charles contributed 11 points apiece, while Wilson added eight points and six assists.
Price and Dozier each led Georgia Southwestern with 20 points, while Tyrone Wooten added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
