Late free throws give Flagler 76-74 win over Young Harris

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Jeffercy Jean hit two free throws with three seconds remaining to give Flagler College a 76-74 Peach Belt Conference men's basketball victory over Young Harris College Tuesday (Dec. 19) afternoon at Flagler Gym.

Flagler improved to 4-3 overall and to 1-2 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions slipped to 2-8 and 1-3. Young  Harris will now break for the holidays and return to action Dec. 30 when they host Francis Marion University in a 3:30 p.m. PBC contest at the YHC Basketball Arena.

Vaughn McCall sank a pair of free throws to give Flagler a 74-65 lead with 2:45 left; however, Young Harris scored nine consecutive points to tie the game at 74. Three Saints consecutive turnovers helped the Mountain Lions tie the game.  The last one saw Ben Waterhouse stole the ball and found Greg Murphy, who missed a layup, but Antonio Wade was able to corral the rebound and put the ball in the hoop to tie the game with six seconds remain.

Wade was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw that would have given Young Harris the lead. Murphy grabbed the rebound, but his putback hit the rim and Jean was able to get the loose ball and get fouled. Jean made both free throws to give the Saints a 76-74 lead. A desperation jumper by Waterhouse at the buzzer caromed off the side of the rim to end the game.

""We didn't guard well and they outplayed us," said YHC head coach Pete Herrmann. "I thought Angus Howey gave us some good minutes and we got good play from Demari (Edwards) in the second half."

McCall led Flagler with 22 points, while Cortlin Davis and Damerit Brown added 15 each. Jean finished with 12 points.

Waterhouse led YHC with 19 points, while Wade finished with 11 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Corey Nelson tallied 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists and six steals.
