Robayo, Martinez lead Mountain Lions past Hurricanes 9-0

AMERICUS, Ga. | Lucero Robayo scored three times while teammate Maria Martinez added two as the Young Harris College women's soccer team shut out Georgia Southwestern State University 9-0 in a Peach Belt Conference match Wednesday (Oct. 25) afternoon at Hurricane Field.

The Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 8 in Southeast region in the latest NCAA Division II regional rankings, improved to 9-4-1 overall and to 6-2-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Hurricanes remained winless in 14 matches, including nine league encounters. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Oct. 28) when they travel to Pembroke, North Carolina, for a noon PBC match against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Currently the Mountain Lions and the Braves are currently tied for fourth place in the Peach Belt, entering the final day of action.

Young Harris, which outshot the Hurricanes 13-0 in the first half, took command of the match early as Martinez scored her first goal of the season off a Robayo assist at the 4:38 mark. Cristina Moreno gave the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead nine minutes later off an assist from Maria Guzman. Robayo, who leads Young Harris with nine goals, scored the next three goals for the Mountain Lions as YHC took a 5-0 lead at the 35:41 mark.  YHC got another goal from Martinez and one from Coleen Johnson right before halftime to take a 7-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions added goals from Tenysha Taylor and Emily Ober in the second half. Miranda Simpson has two assists in the match for YHC while Moreno added another one.

Young Harris finished the match with a 20-1 advantage in shots (17-0 on goal) and an 8-2 margin in corner kicks. Nicole Medeiros and Alyssa Spridgeon combined on the shutout in goal for the Mountain Lions. Sammie Conley (five) and Ellie Cook (three) combined to stop eight shots for the Hurricanes.
