MORROW, Ga. | Dean Foster scored twice, including the winner in overtime, to lead Clayton State University to a 4-3 Peach Belt Conference men's soccer victory over Young Harris College Wednesday (Oct. 18) evening at Laker Field.
The Lakers improved to 7-6-0 overall and to 2-2-0 in the PBC, while the No. 7 Mountains Lions saw their nine-match unbeaten streak snapped as they fell to 10-2-2 and 4-1-1. Young Harris, which had been ranked No. 1 in the Southeast region in the first NCAA Division II Regional Rankings of the season earlier in the day, will look to rebound next Wednesday (Oct. 25) when they travel to Americus, Georgia, for a 3:30 p.m. PBC match against Georgia Southwestern State University.
Foster's game-winning goal came 5:27 in the overtime period when he buried his eighth goal of the season into the top right corner of the goal off a free kick from 30 yards out on the right side. Foster sent the match into extra time when he chipped a ball past the keeper at the 68:11 mark to tie the match at 3.
Young Harris, which outshot Clayton State 30-13 (18-9 on goal), had several excellent chances to win the match in regulation, but Clayton State goalkeeper Oliver Pannell, who had 15 saves, had the answer. The Mountain Lions had three-point blank shots in the final 30 seconds of regulation that Pannell managed to turn away.
After Clayton State had taken a 2-1 lead on a Kwaku Dwamena penalty kick at the 56:42, the Mountain Lions scored twice off
Macauley King corner kicks in a six-minute stretch to take a 3-2 lead.
Marco Micaletto, who leads the team with eight goals after scoring twice against the Lakers, tied the match at 2 on a chip shot, while
Mikie Rowe gave the Mountain Lions the lead on a header at the 65:13 mark. It was Rowe's seventh goal of the season. With those two assists, KIng leads the Peach Belt with nine. Young Harris mounted a 15-2 advantage on corner kicks against the Lakers.
Alex Iglesias had five saves for the Mountain Lions.
