YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College and Lander University battled to a 1-1 double overtime tn a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match between two nationally ranked teams Saturday (Oct. 14) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse FIeld.
The No. 7-ranked Mountain Lions improved to 10-1-2 overall and to 4-0-1 in the Peach Belt, while the 17-ranked Bearcats advanced to 9-2-1 and 5-0-1. Between the two teams, they have claimed the past five PBC titles (Lander won in 2012 and 2016, while Young Harris won in 2013, 2014 and 2015). Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 18) when they travel to Morrow, Georgia, for a 7:30 p.m. league encounter against Clayton State University.
The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead on a
Sam Jones goal - his first of the season - at the 70:49 mark.
Macauley King's initial shot from the left side was saved by Dean Cowdrey, who couldn't hold on to the ball. A Lander defender tried to clear the loose ball and it deflected right to Jones, who buried the ball in the back of the net.
It would stay that way, until 54 seconds remaining when Lander tied the match at 1 on an own goal. Jamie Lunn collected a loose ball on the left side of the box. YHC goalkeeper
Alex Iglesias came out to challenge Lunn's shot, which was deflected in off a YHC defender's leg as he was trying to clear the ball off the line.
Young Harris played the final 6:16 of regulation and the two overtimes a man short after a player received a red card for his second caution of the match.
The Mountain Lions held a 13-8 margin in shots and collected seven corner kicks to Lander's three. Iglesias had three saves in goal for Young Harris, while Cowdrey posted five for Lander.
