YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College defeated Carson-Newman University 3-1 in a battle of nationally ranked men's soccer teams Wednesday (Oct. 11) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The No. 7-ranked Mountain Lions won their eighth consecutive match to improve to 10-1-1, while the No. 21 Eagles fell to 9-2-1. Young Harris faces another ranked team Saturday (Oct. 14) at home when they face No. 17 Lander University in a 7:30 p.m. match. The Mountain Lions will recognize their seven seniors prior to start of the match.
Young Harris, which held a 25-8 (15-3 on goal) advantage on shots, took a 1-0 lead at the 17:46 mark.
Mikie Rowe collected a ball and passed it back to
Val Feeney at the top of the box. Feeney then blasted the ball into left corner of the net for his first goal of 2017.
The Mountain Lions added two insurance goals within a three-minute span midway through the second half.
Carlos Gomez scored at the 76:00 mark when he knocked in a rebound of
Mehdy Hidane's initial shot that Carson-Newman goalkeeper Twan Verweij couldn't collect. It was Gomez's seventh goal of the campaign. YHC took a 3-0 lead when
Marco Micaletto scored at 79:06 mark on a penalty kick after a YHC player was fouled in the box. It was Micaletto's sixth strike of the year.
Carson-Newman thwarted the shutout when Tom Read scored his seventh goal of the year off a cross from Tobias Solem Karlsen with one second left.
The Mountain Lions registered nine corner kicks to two for the Eagles.
Alex Iglesias collected two saves for the Mountain Lions, while Verweij stopped 12 for the Eagles.
