ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Young Harris College ended the game on a 13-3 run as the Mountain Lions rallied for a 78-71 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over Flagler College Saturday (Jan. 7) afternoon at Flagler Gym.
The Mountain Lions improved to 6-5 overall and to 2-2 in the Peach Belt, while the Saints fell to 2-9 and remain winless in four league contests. The Mountain Lions will return home to the YHC Basketball Arena  Wednesday (Jan. 11) for a 5:30 p.m. PBC contest against Columbus State University.
The game was a tight one as there were 19 lead changes and six times that the score was tied. Neither team led by more than eight points during the game with Young Harris' largest lead - seven points - was the final score.
Flagler took a 68-65 lead with 4:47 left on a Bri Roberts jumper. Young Harris got a
Briana Bell layup and an old-fashioned three-point play from
Jenny Vernet to take the lead at 70-68 with 3:35 to play. Both scores were set up by Flagler turnovers. A putback and a layup from Bria Ratliff on back-to-back possessions extended the Mountain Lion lead to six points - 74-68 - with 97 seconds left.Â
"We gutted a win out today on the road," said YHC head coach
Matt Stearsman. Â "Proud of us for getting the stops we needed at the end, but we have to get better defensively. We had several carry us down the stretch and it is a great road win."
The closest the Saints got the remainder of the game was three points (74-71).
Meredith Tarver led Young Harris with 22 points and five rebounds. Bell added 18 points and six rebounds, while Ratliff finished with 11 points.
Jenny Vernet tossed in nine points, while Sara Reid added seven points and six rebounds.
Roberts led Flagler with 19 points, while Maggie Flynn (18) and Tiffany Hodge (17) finished in double figures.
