YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | C.J. Wilson led four Young Harris College players in double figures with 17 points as the Mountain Lions pulled away from Georgia College 75-60 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday (Jan. 25) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Mountain Lions improved to 12-6 overall and remain in first place in the PBC West Division with a 6-3 ledger, while the Bobcats slipped to 10-8 and 4-5. Young Harris hosts second place Clayton State University Saturday (Jan. 28) at 3:30 p.m.
Young Harris got off to a quick start. The Mountain Lions scored the game's first 11 points, culminated by Wilson's jumper with 14;29 remaining in the first half. The Bobcats battled back and got as close as two points (22-20) before the Mountain Lions used an 11-2 run to push back their lead to nine points (33-24) on a
Ben Waterhouse three-pointer with 2:14 to go. Georgia College made a late run to get within three points (34-31) on a Kohl Roberts dunk as the buzzer sounded to end the half.
Georgia College took its only lead of the game at 46-45 after Drew Romich connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key with 13:17 remaining in the game. The Mountain Lions retook the lead on their next possession on a Wilson jumper and held the lead until a putback by Garrick DeBowles tied the game one final time at 56 with 4:38 left.
Again Young Harris took the lead for good on its next possession as
J.B. Charles five seconds later. That basket started a 10-0 run as the Mountain Lions opened up a 66=56 lead on a Waterhouse free throw with 40 ticks left. The Mountain Lions further expanded their lead as they his seven of eight free throws in the final 33 seconds.
"It was a good win defensively as we held them under 40 percent shooting," said YHC head coach
Pete Herrmann. "Overall it was good to get back in the win column and play good defense. It was a good solid win. We have to defend our court. These January games set up your chances for the regular season title and the postseason."
Wilson also led the Mountain Lions with eight assists, while
Corey Nelson added 14 points. Waterhouse and Charles each tossed in 12 points apiece, while
Marcellus Roberts had  nine points and 11 rebounds to go along with his four blocked shots.
DeBowles led the Bobcats with 12 points, wile Desmond Mitchell-LaFlam and Austin Dukes had 11. Kohl Roberts picked up a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
