Augusta defeats Mountain Lions in battle of divisional leaders

AUGUSTA, Ga. | Augusta University led wire-to-wire as they defeated Young Harris College 90-58 in a battle of Peach Belt Conference men's basketball divisional leaders Monday (Jan. 16) afternoon at the Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Augusta improved to 13-3 overall and to 6-2 in the PBC East, while Young Harris fell to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the PBC West. The Mountain Lions wrap up their three-game road trip Wednesday (Jan. 18) at 7:30 p.m. Central time when they face the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama.

The Jaguars used an 11-3 run midway through the first half to open up a 21-11 lead on a Vlad Cobzaru layup with 10:07 remaining. Keshun Sherrill's three-pointer a minute later pushed the Augusta advantage to 15 points (28-13).

Young Harris used a 14-4 run over the next six minutes to pull within five points (32-27) on a C.J. Wilson jumper with 3:10 to play. Augusta responded by scoring eight of the final 11 points of the half as the Jaguars took a 39-30 lead into the locker room.

The Mountain Lions got as close as they would the remainder of the game - seven points (39-32) - after Marcellus Roberts hit a jump shot 54 seconds into the second half. The Jaguars, who shot 59.3 percent from the field (16-of-27) over the final 20 minutes, broke the game open with a 15-1 run over the next four minutes to open a 54-33 lead on a Kyle Doyle layup with 15:07 left. The Jaguars led by as many 33 points.
