AUGUSTA, Ga. | Augusta University led wire-to-wire as they defeated Young Harris College 90-58 in a battle of Peach Belt Conference men's basketball divisional leaders Monday (Jan. 16) afternoon at the Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Augusta improved to 13-3 overall and to 6-2 in the PBC East, while Young Harris fell to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the PBC West. The Mountain Lions wrap up their three-game road trip Wednesday (Jan. 18) at 7:30 p.m. Central time when they face the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama.
The Jaguars used an 11-3 run midway through the first half to open up a 21-11 lead on a Vlad Cobzaru layup with 10:07 remaining. Keshun Sherrill's three-pointer a minute later pushed the Augusta advantage to 15 points (28-13).
Young Harris used a 14-4 run over the next six minutes to pull within five points (32-27) on a
C.J. Wilson jumper with 3:10 to play. Augusta responded by scoring eight of the final 11 points of the half as the Jaguars took a 39-30 lead into the locker room.
The Mountain Lions got as close as they would the remainder of the game - seven points (39-32) - after
Marcellus Roberts hit a jump shot 54 seconds into the second half. The Jaguars, who shot 59.3 percent from the field (16-of-27) over the final 20 minutes, broke the game open with a 15-1 run over the next four minutes to open a 54-33 lead on a Kyle Doyle layup with 15:07 left. The Jaguars led by as many 33 points.
Sherrill led the Jaguars with 16 points, while Doyle added 15 points and six rebounds. Tyvez Monroe contributed 14 points and seven rebounds while Aaron Byrd finished with 12 points.
Ben Waterhouse led the Mountain Lions with 12 points while Wilson and
Marques McKoy scored 11 apiece.Â
