SAINT LEO, Fla. | Saint Leo University held off Young Harris College 3-2 Saturday (Sept. 2) afternoon at the Saint Leo Soccer Field on the first day of the rain-delayed Saint Leo Invitational.
The Lions improved to 1-0-0 while the Mountain Lions, who are ranked ninth in the NSCAA National Rankings for NCAA Division II, fell to 0-1-0. Young Harris will close out play in the Invitational Sunday (Sept. 4) with a 1 p.m. contest against No. 17 Rollins College.Â
Saint Leo took advantage of a turnover to take a 1-0 lead on a Marcelo Casas goal in the 32nd minute. The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second half on a blast from Bafou Sanogo from outside the box.
Young Harris got a goal back at the 51:40 mark. After taking a short corner from the left side,
Marco Micaletto sent the ball into the box and
Anuar Kanan headed the ball into the back of the net.Â
Saint Leo got another goal three minutes later to open up a 3-1 lead. Young Harris, which outshot the Lions 8-7, got its second goal on another set piece.
Sam Choi sent the ball in off a corner kick from the right side and
Jonny Denton headed into the upper left corner of the net with 3.0 seconds left. The Mountain Lions held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks over Saint Leo.
