ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | A header by
Amber Matthews in the 86th minute gave Young Harris College a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference women's soccer victory over Flagler College Saturday (Sept. 17) afternoon at Saints Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 2-0-2 overall and to 1-0-0 in the Peach Belt. It is the first time in five seasons that Young Harris started league play with a win. Flagler fell to 1-2-1 overall and to 0-1-0 in the league. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Sept. 21) when they travel to Montevallo, Alabama, for a 5 p.m. Central time PBC match against the University of Montevallo.
After Flagler, which led Young Harris 11-8 in fouls, was whistled for a four,
Laisy Scardazzi's direct kick from 28 yards out from the left side found Matthews in the box and her header bounced off the base of the left post and ricocheted into the back of the net to give Young Harris a 1-0 lead at the 85:38 mark. It was Matthews' team-leading fourth strike of the season.
Flagler had one last chance to equalize the match two minutes later; however, Katie Reed's shot clanked off the crossbar for the Saints, who held a 13-11 advantage in shots.
Young Harris goalkeeper
Nicole Medeiros registered six saves as she notched her second shutout of the 2016 campaign, while Flagler netminder Racheal Cecil picked up four saves.
