No. 16 Young Harris, USC Aiken splits doubleheader

AIKEN, S.C. | Young Harris College and the University of South Carolina Aiken split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday (April 9) afternoon at JH Satcher Field.

The No. 16-ranked Mountain Lions won the opener 6-3 in eight innings while the Pacers won the nightcap 3-2. Young Harris improved to 29-115 overall and to 15-7 in the Peach Belt while USC Aiken fell to 24-14 and 8-8.

The 15 league wins are the most in the program's history, topping the 14 wins a year ago. Young Harris wraps up its Peach Belt schedule with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina.

After USC Aiken scored a run in the bottom of the second inning in game one, the Mountain Lions tied it at 1 on Hannah Harrison's infield single. YHC added two more runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead on Murphy Davis' sacrifice fly. The Mountain Lions also converted an error into an unearned run.

The Pacers tied the game at 2 in the seventh to force extra innings. Young Harris mounted out a two-out rally in the eighth as Lindsay Tudor walked and Kelsey Nix and Jeanie Perrucci both singled to load the bases. All three came around to score as the Pacers misplayed a fly ball hit by Harrison.

Darby Stanford (22-4) earned the complete-game win as she retired the side in order for the Pacers in the eighth.

Perrucci led the Mountain Lions with four hits while Harrison, Sarah Magill and Tudor each had two hits.

Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two on a Davis's fielder's choice. The Pacers scored twice in the second before the Mountain Lions tied the game at 2 in the third inning on Grace Botti's ground out.

It would stay that way until the bottom of the seventh. Andrea Daring led off the inning off Perrucci (5-8) with a double down the left field line. Lyndie Dorgan, who pinch ran for Daring, scored on Sarah Montei's single back up the middle.

Perrucci had three of the five hits for the Mountain Lions in the nightcap.
