Lee takes pair from No. 16 Mountain Lions

CLEVELAND, Tenn. | Lee University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from No. 16 Young Harris College Wednesday (April 6) afternoon at Butler Field.
The Flames took game one 10-2 in six innings before holding on for a 5-4 win in game two.

Lee improved to 18-22-1 while the Mountain Lions fell to 28-14. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (April 9) in Aiken, South Carolina, with a 2 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against the University of South Carolina Aiken.

Young Harris took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one on a fielder's choice by Georgia Webb and a bases-loaded walk by Grace Botti. However, the Flames didn't allow the Mountain Lions another run as Lee starter Leigh Beatenbough (5-8) limited Young Harris to just two hits – a single by Murphy Davis in the third inning and Sarah Magill single in the sixth.

Darby Stanford (21-4) took the loss for Young Harris.

Lee took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two before Young Harris tied the game at 2 in the fourth. Botti coaxed another bases-loaded walk and the Mountain Lions took advantage of Lee error for the other.

Young Harris took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a Botti single before Lee tied the game at 3 in the bottom half of the inning. The Flames scored twice in the sixth to open up a 5-3 lead. The Mountain Lions got a run back on a bases loaded walk to Sarah Beth Marquis in the seventh, but Beatenbough earned her second save of 2016 by striking out the final two YHC batters to preserve the win for Angie Hughes (8-11).

Mary Catherine Smith (2-3) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.

Hannah Harrison, Magill, Davis, Georgia Webb and Botti each had a hit for Young Harris in the nightcap.
