Hawks clip Mountain Lions 13-11

ROME, Ga. | Shorter University held Young Harris College scoreless for over 27 minutes as the Hawks rallied for a 13-11 men's lacrosse victory over Young Harris College Saturday (April 16) afternoon at Ben Brady Field.
 
The Hawks improved to 6-7 while the Mountain Lions ended their 2016 campaign at 10-5. The 10 wins for Young Harris set a new program record for wins in a season for the Mountain Lions.
 
Young Harris jumped to a 3-0 lead as Michael Gernatt sandwiched goals around a Connor Leies strike midway through the first quarter. Shorter scored the next two goals before the Mountain Lions rattled home three more goals – all from Jayden Campbell – to open up a 6-2 lead with 9:56 remaining in the first half.
 
Shorter then didn't allow Young Harris to find the back of the net until there was 12:37 remaining in the match. The Hawks scored five unanswered goals during the Mountain Lion drought to regain the lead at 7-6. Chandler Bradley tied the game at 7 for the Mountain Lions, but the Hawks scored six of the night eight goals to open up a 13-9 lead. Young Harris got goals from Leies and Mitch McDole in the final minute but the Mountain Lions couldn't get any closer.
 
Campbell and Leies led the Mountain Lions with three goals apiece while Gernatt and McDole had two each. Bradley scored the other goal. Campbell contributed two assists while Bradley, Matty Ledon and Zach Stephenson had one apiece.
 
Shorter held a slim 40-35 advantage on shots while the Mountain Lions held a 28-26 edge in ground balls. Young Harris picked up 13 face-off wins with Zac Barrett picking up six and Stephenson the other six. Barrett, McDole and Stephenson scored up four ground balls each while Campbell added three more.
 
Mason King picked up 14 saves for the Mountain Lions in goal.
