Mountain Lions split doubleheader with No. 17 Catawba

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College and No. 17 Catawba College split a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday (March 5) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
 
Chandler Stooksbury drove in two runs as the Mountain Lions claimed a 3-1 victory in game one while the Catawba Indians took advantage of an eighth-inning to take a 3-2 win in the nightcap
                                                       
Young Harris improved to 14-6 while Catawba slipped to 13-6. The Mountain Lions return to E.D. Rivers Field Wednesday (March 9) when they step back into Peach Belt Conference competition with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Augusta University.
 
The Mountain Lions took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning in a game one. Sarah Magill led off with a walk and moved to second on a bunt single by Murphy Davis. Stooksbury stroked a two-run, two-out double to left-center field.
 
Young Harris added an insurance run an inning later as they took advantage of a Catawba fielding error. Catawba got a run back as Delane Smith led off the seventh inning with a home run.
 
Darby Stanford improved to 11-1 as she scattered seven hits and struck out four with a complete-game effort.
 
Hannah Harrison, Jeanie Perrucci, Kelsey Nix and Rachel Benson also picked up hits for the Mountain Lions.
 
The Catawba Indians took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two on RBI doubles by Carley Tysinger and Ashley Wagoner. Young Harris scratched across runs in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game at 2. Sarah Beth Marquis drove in the run in the fourth on a fielder's choice while Georgia Webb smashed a RBI double to right in the sixth.
 
Catawba took advantage of a dropped fly ball to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning off Perrucci (1-4), who allowed just two hits and one unearned run in five innings of relief.
 
Harrison had two of the four Mountain Lion hits in the nightcap.
