No. 19 YHC runs win streak to six with sweep of Cougars

COLUMBUS, Ga. | The Young Harris College softball team extended their winning streak to six games with a sweep of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader over Columbus State University Saturday (March 26) afternoon at Cougar Field.

Young Harris won the opener 7-3 before they took a 7-4 win in game two.

The 19th-ranked Mountain Lions improved to 25-9 and to 11-3 in the Peach Belt while the Cougars slipped to 18-17 and 4-6. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (March 30) as they host the University of Montevallo in a 4 p.m. PBC doubleheader at E.D. Rivers Field. The doubleheader will also be the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer Game for the Mountain Lions.

In the opener, the Mountain Lions exploded for seven runs in the third and fourth innings. Jeanie Perrucci and Murphy Davis had back-to-back RBI doubles in the third inning while Sarah Beth Marquis added a run-scoring single in the inning.

Davis put the exclamation point for the Mountain Lions an inning later as she hit a grand slam to left-center field that gave Young Harris a 7-1 lead. It was the first long ball of the campaign for Davis, who led YHC with three hits and five RBI, and it was the only hit of the inning as the Mountain Lions took advantage of two walks and a throwing error.

Darby Stanford (19-1) scattered eight hits and struck out four in the complete-game effort. Peyton Sorrells (8-5) took the loss for the Cougars.

Young Harris jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the third inning of the nightcap as Perrucci contributed a RBI single and Sarah Magill drove in another run on a fielder's choice.

It would stay that way until the seventh inning when the Mountain Lions added five runs, including three on a Magill home run to center field. It was Magill's team-leading seventh homer of 2016. Hannah Harrison drove in another run on a single while Davis added a sacrifice fly.

Perrucci led YHC with two hits while Magill drove in four runs in the nightcap.

Perrucci (4-6) earned the win, allowing just four hits and three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings, while Stanford earned her first save as she allowed no earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work. Hanna Manley (6-6) took the loss for Columbus State, which scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.
