Young Harris rallies from three runs down for 5-4 victory over Flagler

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College erased a three-run deficit to record a 5-4 Peach Belt Conference baseball win over Flagler College Friday (March 11) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 7-12 overall and to 2-8 in the conference while the Saints slipped to 8-10 and 3-7. The two teams will wrap up their three-game weekend series with a noon doubleheader Saturday (March 12), an hour earlier than originally scheduled to beat the expected rains in the area later in the day.

Flagler jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning as James Jean smacked a three-run homer to left center field. It was his fourth homer of 2016.

Young Harris got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Nick Sexton walloped the first of his two home runs – a solo shot to left-center field - on the day. The Mountain Lions tied the game at 3 an inning later as Zach Odom laced a two-run scorcher down the left-field line to score Brett Westmoreland and Zach Beggs. Westmoreland started the inning with a walk and Beggs followed with a double to left center.

Flagler momentarily regained the lead at 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning on an Igor Baez's solo homer to right field, but Sexton led off the bottom half of the inning with his third homer – to right field – of the season to tie the game at 4 for the Mountain Lions.

It would stay that way until the bottom of the eighth. Zach Wall led off with a single through the left side and moved to second on Luke Miller's sacrifice bunt.  Wall moved over to third base when Flagler reliever Jeremy Graf (1-1) uncorked a wild pitch. Wall scored the go-ahead run on Westmoreland's double down the left field line on a 3-2 pitch.

Reliever Cody Beck (1-3) picked up the win as he tossed two scoreless inning, scattering two hits and striking out two.

Odom, Sexton and Westmoreland led the Mountain Lions, who outhit the Saints 10-6, with two hits each. Baez led the Saints with three hits.
