Young Harris splits final two games at Gulf Coast Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. | The Young Harris College softball team split their final two games at the Gulf Coast Invitational Sunday (Feb. 7) afternoon.
                      
The Mountain Lions shut out the University of North Alabama 5-0, snapping the Lions' 10-game winning streak. The University of West Alabama used a four-run first inning to defeat Young Harris 5-2 in the tournament finale.
 
The Mountain Lions improved to 6-2 and they will return to action Saturday (Feb. 12) at the Cougar Classic in Columbus, Georgia. Young Harris will play Bellarmine University at 2 p.m. followed by a 4:30 p.m. contest against Lincoln Memorial University.
 
Young Harris scored in each of the first three innings against North Alabama to take a 5-0 lead. Sarah Magill had a bases-loaded walk in the first while Magill added a two-run double in a three-run second inning. Jeanie Perrucci added an RBI infield single in the inning. The Mountain Lions closed out the scoring with a Chandler Stooksbury single in the third inning.  Stooksbury and Perrucci each collected two
 
Darby Stanford (3-1) scattered nine hits and struck out two in the complete-game effort.
 
West Alabama took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap as they had three hits and took advantage of a Mountain Lion error and two wild pitches. Young Harris got a run back in the third on a Perrucci RBI single and added another in the fifth on a Grace Botti run-scoring single to center field.
 
Mary Catherine Smith (2-1) took the loss for the Mountain Lions while Perrucci recorded five strikeouts in nearly six innings of relief.
