YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Briana Bell led five Young Harris College players in double figures as the Mountain Lions snapped Brenau University's six-game winning streak with an 89-59 non-conference women's basketball victory Tuesday (Nov. 22) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The 89 points were the second most scored by Young Harris in the NCAA era as the Mountain Lions improved to 2-1. The Golden Tigers suffered their first loss of the campaign as they fell to 6-1. Â Young Harris starts a four-game road trip Saturday (Nov. 26) when they travel to Evansville, Indiana, for a 2:30 p.m. Central time game against the University of Southern Indiana on the first day of the USI Thanksgiving Classic.
Young Harris took control of the game in the final two minutes of the first quarter and the first two of the second quarter as the Mountain Lions reeled up 12 unanswered points to open up a 28-14 lead with 7:53 remaining in the half on a
Tamiera Mobley jumper in the paint. The closest the Golden Tigers would get the rest of the way was eight points (28-20) after Madison Zaferatos hit a three-pointer with 6:27 left.Â
The Mountain Lions, who led 37-25 at the half, used a 12-2 run at the start of the third quarter to push their lead out to 22 points (49-27) on a layup by
Sara Jorgensen with 7:23 left. Young Harris, which shot 50.7 percent from the floor (36-of-71), Â took its largest lead of the game - 32 points (85-53) - on an old-fashioned three-point play by Bell, who was 6-of-8 from the field, with 2:54 remaining in the game.
Mobley scored 13 points for the Mountain Lions while
Jenny Vernet and Jorgensen each contributed 12 apiece. Bria Ratliff also finished in double figures with 11 points. Young Harris held a 39-27 advantage on the glass as
Meredith Tarver led YHC with eight rebounds and Vernet grabbed seven more.
Jada Williams and
Dyiesha Brown also pulled down six rebounds for the Mountain Lions.Â
"It was another balanced effort," said Young Harris head coach
Matt Stearsman. "I was really pleased that we put together 40 solid minutes. A lot of our offense came from forced turnovers and offensive rebounds. Brenau has played us tough every year I've been at YHC and I challenged our team to put a whole game together and we did. Brenau is better than the score indicated, but I have to give our kids credit on how well they played."
Dominique Patrick led the Golden Tigers with 18 points while Briah Woods tossed in 10.
