YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Ramin Varnhorn's header in the 106th minute was the difference as Young Harris College upset No. 9 Limestone College 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday (Oct. 5) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 4-5-0 as they remained unbeaten in the all-time series (4-0) with the Saints. Limestone fell to 8-1-0. Young Harris will wait to find out when its next match will be played. The Mountain Lions' Peach Belt Conference match against Francis Marion University Saturday (Oct. 8) in Florence, South Carolina, has been postponed due to Hurricane Matthew. The match has tentatively has been rescheduled for Monday (Oct. 10), but has not been confirmed.
The match was evenly played between the two NCAA Division II Tournament teams in each of the past two seasons. Limestone held a 14-13 advantage on shots, while Young Harris held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
After Limestone was whistled for a foul near the endline at the 105:27 mark,
Jonny Denton played the indirect kick to
Marco Micaletto, who played it back to Denton. Denton served the ball into the center of the box where Varnhorn headed the ball into the left corner of the goal. It was Varnhorn's third goal of the campaign. The goal snapped a scoreless streak of 297 minutes by the Saints.
Anton Viden earned his second shutout of the season for the Mountain Lions as recorded five saves, including two huge saves down the stretch in the final minutes of regulation. Limestone's Greg Purvis also tallied five saves, including a nice save on
Mehdy Hidane's point-blank shot in the final minutes of the first overtime.
