JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. | Ramin Varnhorn provided Young Harris College the match-winning goal for the second consecutive match as the Mountain Lions picked up a 2-1 men's soccer non-conference victory over Carson-Newman University Wednesday (Oct. 12) at McCown Field.
The Mountain Lions won their third consecutive match as they leveled their record at 5-5-0 while the Eagles fell to 6-6-0. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Oct. 15) at 7:30 p.m. when they face Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference match in Greenwood, South Carolina.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead at the 13:53 mark.
Alex Jacq started the scoring with a run down the left side and sent in a low cross into the box and
Mehdy Hidane charged into the scoring area and flicked it past the Carson-Newman keeper. The goal was Hidane's second of the season.
The Eagles tied the match in the 79th minute when Marius Staalby converted a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box by the Mountain Lions. It was Staalby's sixth goal of 2016.
However, it didn't take long for Young Harris to regain the advantage.Â
The game-winner was set up by an offside call against Carson-Newman. Young Harris goalkeeper
Anton Viden's free kick was headed by Varnhorn from just outside the 18-yard box to
Mikie Rowe, who took it into the left corner and lofted a cross towards the six-yard box. Varnhorn was there and outjumped his defender for the ball, heading it past a diving Carson-Newman keeper for the deciding goal at the 83:42 mark. It was the fourth goal - all coming in the last four matches for YHC - for Varnhorn of the 2016 campaign. It was also the second match-winning goal in a row for Varnhorn, who also scored the deciding goal in double overtime to defeat then-No. 9 Limestone College Oct. 5.
Carson-Newman held a slim 16-14 advantage on shots, but Young Harris held a 6-5 lead on corner kicks. Viden collected five saves in goal for the Mountain Lions while Joe Boyd registered four for the Eagles.
