Lander rallies for 3-2 double OT win over Young Harris

GREENWOOD, S.C. | Michael Leach's goal with 3:25 remaining in the second overtime was the difference as Lander University rallied for a 3-2 Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday (Oct. 15) evening at Van Taylor Stadium.

The Bearcats improved to 9-3-0 overall and to 6-0-0 in the Peach Belt while the Mountain Lions saw their three-match winning streak snapped and fell to 5-6-0 and 2-3-0. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (Oct. 18) when they host Clayton State in a 7:30 p.m. PBC encounter at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

Leach scored the deciding goal - his fourth of the year - off a pass from George Knight.

Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on the fourth goal of the season by Carlos Gomez. Gomez took a pass at the top of the box  and he weaved his way around three Lander defenders and put the ball in the left corner of the goal.

The Mountain Lions added an insurance goal at the 57:02 mark to take a 2-0 lead. Gomez passed the ball from the right side to Anthony Tshimpi in front of the goal and Tshimpi put the ball in the net for his second goal of 2016.

Lander got one back when Richard Bryan converted a penalty kick 87 seconds later. Bryan's kick was stopped by YHC goalkeeper Anton Viden, but the ball rolled off his hands and into the left corner of the net for Bryan's first goal of the season.

The Bearcats tied the match at 2 at the 69:47 mark on Sam Loft's sixth goal of the season. It came off a pass from Hugh Delhommelle and Lofts was able to put it in the uppper left corner for the score.

Young Harris had two great opportunities to win the match in the final minutes of  regulation. With just over five minutes remaining, Tshimpi's shot connected with the crossbar and Jones' rebound was knocked away by the Lander goalkeeper.

The Mountain Lions held advantages in shots (13-12) and corner kicks (4-3). Viden recorded four saves for the Mountain Lions while Dean Cowdroy had two in goal for the Bearcats.
