YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. |
The Young Harris College men's soccer team scored twice in each half as the Mountain Lions picked up a 4-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over Clayton State University Tuesday (Oct. 18) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions leveled their record at 6-6-0 overall and to 3-3-0 in the league while the Lakers slipped to 2-12-0 and winless in six PBC matches. Young Harris returns to action Thursday (Oct. 20) when they travel to Florence, South Carolina, for a 6 p.m. PBC match against Francis Marion University. This match was originally scheduled for Oct. 8, but was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew.

Mikie Rowe gave Young Harris, which outshot Clayton State 26-5, a 1-0 lead at the 19:46 mark. Macauley King slotted a pass on the left side to Rowe at the left post and Rowe deposited the ball in the right corner of the net. The Mountain Lions, who held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks, doubled their lead 10 minutes as Ramin Varnhorn scored from six yards out off Alex Jacq's corner kick from the right side. It was the fifth goal of the season for both Rowe and Varnhorn.

King scored twice in a five-minute stretch in the waning minutes of the second half to open up a 4-0 lead. King scored on a penalty kick at the 81:48 mark after Clayton State committed a foul inside the box. King added a strike from the right corner of the box at the 86:47 mark. It was the first two goals of the season for King.

Will Summerfield added a goal with 1:33 remaining in the match for the Lakers. It was his fourth goal of the season.

Sebastian Thomsson, who was making his first start in goal for the Mountain Lions, had two saves while Leuri Fraire recorded 11 stops for the Lakers.
