YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Seniors led the way for the Young Harris College men's soccer team as they picked up a 9-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over the University of North Carolina at Pembroke Saturday (Oct. 29) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions won their fourth consecutive match - third by shutout - as they improved to 9-6-0 overall and into a three-way tie for second place in the PBC with a 6-3-0 ledger. Young Harris, which earned the No. 3 seed in the PBC Tournament, will face No. 6 seed University of Montevallo at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Young Harris recognized its senior class -
Marijo Gojic,
Alex Wyper,
Ramin Varnhorn and
Jonny Denton - prior to the match that has been responsible for 61 wins, three PBC titles, two PBC Tournament titles and two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. Against the Braves, three of the four seniors found the back of the net.  Wyper put the Mountain Lions on the board at 1-0 on his first goal of the season in the 18th minute. Varnhorn made it 2-0 eight minutes later on a header, his sixth of the season. Denton gave YHC a  4-0 lead on a header - his second goal of 2016 - in the box 15 minutes into the second half. Gojic nearly had a goal of his own in the latter stages of the second half, but couldn't coral the ball in the box.
The Mountain Lions outshot the Braves 39-2 (23-1 on goal).
Anthony Tshimpi added a goal - his fourth - Â in the first half, while
Carlos Gomez and
Mikie Rowe added strikes in the second half. For Gomez, it was his team-leading 10th goal while Rowe put in his sixth of the campaign.
Anuar Kanan recorded his first hat trick as he scored three goals in the final nine minutes. Kanan doubled his season output to six goals for the Mountain Lions.
Marco Micaletto had two assists to lead Young Harris, while
Alex Jacq and Rowe also contributed one apiece.
Young Harris held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Mountain Lion goalkeeper
Sebastian Thomsson picked up one save as he recorded his third consecutive shutout. UNC Pembroke goalkeeper Lucas Gusmao tallied 14 saves.
