OUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Carlos Gomez scored twice and assisted on another goal as Young Harris College recorded a 3-0 shutout over Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Wednesday (Oct. 26) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions won their third consecutive match as they improved to 8-6-0 overall and to 5-3-0 in the league, while the Hurricanes fell to 2-11-1 and 1-7-0. Young Harris closes out the regular season with a 3:30 p.m. PBC home match Saturday (Oct. 29) against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The Mountain Lions will recognize their seniors prior to the match.
Gomez, who is the reigning PBC Player of the Week, gave the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead at the 27:05 mark when he knocked in a rebound of
Macauley King's initial shot. Gomez, who has scored six of his team-high nine goals in the last four matches, doubled the Young Harris lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute as he collected a loose ball in the box and struck for 15 yards out.Â
Ramin Varnhorn scored his fifth goal of the 2016 campaign at the 72:33 mark to give the Mountain Lions a 3-0 lead. Varnhorn scored when he knocked in a rebound of Gomez's shot.
Young Harris outshot the Hurricanes 28-3 (15-1 on goal) and had an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Sebastian Thomsson picked up his second consecutive shutout as he recorded a save. Joshua Swift collected 12 saves for the Hurricanes.
