FLORENCE, S.C. | Amber Matthews and
Lucero Robayo each scored twice as Young Harris College shut out Francis Marion University 8-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Monday (Oct. 24) afternoon at Murray Hartzler Field.
Young Harris won its fourth consecutive match to improve to 8-2-3 overall and into a tie for fourth place in the PBC with a 7-2-1 ledger. The Mountain Lions return to action Monday (Oct. 26) when they host Georgia Southwestern State University in a 4 p.m. Peach Belt contest at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions scored twice in the first 13 minutes to take a quick 2-0 lead.
Baylee Roche scored her fourth goal on a bender from 19 yards out at the 5:59 mark while Matthews added a header seven minutes later off a free kick from 40 yards out.
Sydney Baird and
Emily Ober had assists on the goal.
Young Harris, which set a college record (NCAA era) with 44 shots, exploded for 27 shots in the second half as the Mountain Lions broke the match open with six goals.Ober started the scoring parade with a goal from 14 yards out while Matthews added another score on a header to take a 4-0 lead at the 67:27 mark. Robayo scored the next two goals over a nine-minute stretch before
Marilla Lages and
Laisy Scardazzi added strikes in the final four minutes of the match. Roche,
Jordyn Brown,
Maria Martinez and Baird also accounted for assists in the second half.
Kylie Mason scooped up two saves for the Mountain Lions in goal to register her second shutout in as many games. Francis Marion goalkeeper Casey Murakami had 13 saves.
