YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Olivia Jarrell's goal in the 54th minute was the difference as Columbus State University held off Young Harris College 1-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Wednesday (Oct. 12) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Cougars, who are ranked sixth nationally, improved to 10-2-0 overall and to 6-1-0 in the Peach Belt while the Mountain Lions slipped to 4-2-3 and 3-2-1. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Oct. 15) when they travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, for a 5 p.m. PBC contest against Lander University.
After the teams battled through a scoreless first half, things heated up over the final 45 minutes.
Young Harris nearly took the lead but
Jordyn Brown's finish off a pass across the box from
Baylee Roche ricocheted off the crossbar and bounced away in the 49th minute. Columbus State took a 1-0 lead at the 53:40 mark when Mandy Janowitz sent a long ball down the right side of the field to Jarrell, who put the ball in the right corner of the net.
The Mountain Lions nearly tied the match in the 74th minute when
Sydney Baird's direct kick from 25 yards out on the left side careened off the right corner of the crossbar.
Columbus State outshot Young Harris 18-7 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Young Harris'
Nicole Medeiros recorded a career-high 11 saves in goal while Maylyn Parson earned the shutout for the Cougars and picked up one save.
