YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Young Harris College women's soccer team scored three first half goals as they shut out the University of South Carolina Aiken 3-0 in a Peach Belt Conference match Saturday (Oct. 1) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions picked up their fourth shutout and third in the PBC as Young Harris improved to 4-1-3 overall and to 3-1-1 in the conference while the Pacers fell to 3-8-0 and 1-4-0. The three league wins equals the most by the Mountain Lions in any season and YHC, which is tied for third place in the PBC, still has seven league matches still to play. Young Harris returns to the field Saturday (Oct. 8) when they travel to Florence, South Carolina, for a 4 p.m. league encounter with Francis Marion University.
Young Harris, which outshot USC Aiken 16-9, opened up a quick 1-0 lead.
Baylee Roche scored her third goal of the 2016 campaign when she headed the ball in the goal at the 7:32 mark after
Amber Matthews sent the ball into the box. Young Harris added a second goal eight minutes later when an USC Aiken defender tried to clear a shot taken by
Maria Martinez; however, the Pacer defender headed the ball into her own goal.
The Mountain Lions, who held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks, added their final goal at the 24:31 mark when
Olivia Goddard scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out and bent it into the left corner of the net for her first strike of the season.
Young Harris netminder
Nicole Medeiros recorded two saves as she picked up her third shutout of the year. Karin Cadwalader registered five saves for the Pacers.
