Records fall as Mountain Lions tame Pacers 11-1

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Records fell Saturday (Oct. 1) afternoon as the Young Harris College men's soccer team tamed the University of South Carolina Aiken 11-1 in a Peach Belt Conference match at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 3-5-0 overall and to 2-2-0 in the Peach Belt while the Pacers fell to 2-6-0 and 1-1-0. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 5) when they host No. 14 Limestone College in a 5 p.m. non-conference match. Both YHC and Limestone advanced to the NCAA tournament in each of the past two seasons.

The 11 goals - including seven scored in the second half - was the most scored by the Mountain Lions in the NCAA era, topping the eight goals YHC scored three different times against its cross-mountain rival University of North Georgia. The 11 goals in a PBC match was one shy of the all-time record of 12 set by the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg in its match against Columbus State University in 1991.

Leading the way for the Mountain Lions was sophomore forward Marco Micaletto, who scored four times and assisted on another. The four goals by Micaletto tied him with Ilija Ilic and Niall McCabe for the most by a YHC player in a match during the NCAA era. Micaletto's nine points also tied him with McCabe, who turned the trick against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2013. Micaletto wasted little time getting in the scoring column as he converted the first of three penalty kicks 39 seconds into the match after Mikie Rowe was taken down in the box.

Rowe and Anuar Kanan scored twice for the Mountain Lions, who broke open the match with four goals within a 10-minute streak in the early moments of the season. Daniel Fabrizio, Mehdy Hidane and Anthony Tshimpi also found the back of the net for Young Harris, which outshot USC Aiken, which suffered its worst defeat since 1995, 29-10. Alex Jacq led the Mountain Lions with two assists while Macauley King, Carlos Gomez, Tshimpi, Alex Wyper and Kanan has one apiece.

Anton Viden picked up four saves for the Mountain Lions in 66 minutes while Andrew Gillman added one in 24 minutes. Jesse Rooker collected five saves for the Pacers.
