Mountain Lions outlast Jaguars 105-99 in double overtime

AUGUSTA, Ga. | C.J. scored 10 of his game-high 29 points in double overtime as Young Harris College outlasted Augusta University 105-99 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Monday (Jan. 18) afternoon at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
 
The Mountain Lions improved to 10-8 overall and remains in first place in the conference with an 8-1 ledger while the Jaguars fell to 9-7 and 5-4. Young Harris will entertain Columbus State University in a 3:30 p.m. PBC contest Saturday (Jan. 23) at the YHC Basketball Arena.
 
Wilson recorded a double double with a college- (NCAA era) and career-record 15 assists. Wilson was one of six players to finish in double figures for the Mountain Lions. Marques McKoy nearly had a double double himself as he scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds before fouling out. Ben Waterhouse added 18 points and eight rebounds while Bjorn Walker added 12 points and eight rebounds before he fouled out. Marcellus Roberts also scored 12 points and recorded four blocked shots while J.B. Charles added 10 points and six rebounds.
 
Augusta was led by Keshun Sherrill's 19 points and seven rebounds while Tommy Williams added 17 points and 10 rebounds. Aaron Byrd and Deane Williams each scored 14 points while Keith Crump had 13.
 
In a game that saw 17 lead changes and 13 ties, Augusta led by seven points (70-63) with 4:51 remaining in regulation on a Byrd jumper. The Mountain Lions got layups from McKoy and Roberts sandwiched around a Waterhouse three-pointer over the next two minutes to tie the game at 70. Augusta led 75-72 with 50 seconds left after two free throws by Tommy Williams, but Waterhouse sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer from the left corner from Waterhouse with 34 seconds left.
 
Augusta led the majority of the first overtime period, leading by four points (85-81) after Deane Williams hit two free throws with 40 seconds left. The Mountain Lions got a James Laput layup 13 seconds later before Byrd hit the first of two free throws to give the Jaguars an 86-83 lead with 23 seconds remaining. Charles grabbed the rebound for Young Harris, which held a 57-44 advantage on the glass, off the missed free throw. Wilson then sent the game into a second overtime at 86 on his three-pointer from the top of the key.
 
Augusta took a 91-89 lead on a free throw by Tommy Williams with 4:03 left. Young Harris took the lead for good on two Roberts free throws and a stick back from Charles to open up a 93-91 lead with 2:05 to go. On their next possession, Wilson used a step-back three-pointer from the top of the key to give YHC a 96-91 advantage. Young Harris, which was 25-of-30 from the charity stripe, pushed the lead to eight points (101-93) with 33 seconds left as Waterhouse hit three of four free throws.
 
Augusta mounted one last rally by scoring the next six points as the Jaguars converted two YHC turnovers, closing to within 101-99 after a jumper by Crump with 26 second left. However, Wilson converted all four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
 
"It was a great win," said Young Harris head coach Pete Herrmann. "They are starting to trust one another. We had so many heroes tonight. We got some clutch baskets tonight and outrebounded them. Ben Waterhouse did a great job defending Keshun Sherrill and making him earn his points."
