MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The University of Montevallo led from wire-to-wire and recorded a 79-59 Peach Belt Conference men's basketball victory over Young Harris College Wednesday (Jan. 13) evening at Trustmark Arena.
Â
The Falcons, who have recorded six straight wins over Young Harris, improved to 8-6 overall and to 4-3 in the league while the Mountain Lions suffered their first PBC loss as they fell to 8-8 and 6-1. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Jan. 19) at 3:30 p.m. when they host PBC-foe Francis Marion University at the YHC Basketball Arena.
Â
Montevallo used a 16-2 run to open up a 34-13 lead on a Malik Fields layup with 9:43 remaining. Fields scored seven points during the decided run. Young Harris fought back and closed to within 10 points (41-31) as
C.J. Wilson used an old-fashioned three-point play right before the half.
Â
The Mountain Lions trimmed the deficit down to single digits – nine points (44-35) - on a
Marcellus Roberts jumper with 17:19 to play. However, that would be as close as they would get as Montevallo used an 11-2 run to open up a 55-37 advantage on a Talan Whitaker layup with 14:32 left. Montevallo, which scored 22 points off YHC's 17 turnovers, led by as many as 25 points in the latter stages of the contest.
Â
Terrell Lipkins led the Falcons with 27 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the floor and added eight assists. Kevin Kelly added 13 points while Bryant Orange (12) and Fields (10) finished in double figures.
Â
Wilson was the top scorer for Young Harris with 19 points while
