No. 5 Young Harris tames No. 13 Lions 3-0 in season opener

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College opened up its 2015 men's soccer schedule with a 3-0 win over Saint Leo University Thursday (Sept. 3) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 5 nationally, improved to 1-0-0 while the No. 13-ranked Lions fell to 0-1-0 in a battle of two that made the NCAA Division II National Tournament a year ago. Young Harris will face Florida Southern College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 5) on the final day of the YHC Invitational while Lees-McRae, which defeated Florida Southern 2-0 earlier Thursday, will face Saint Leo at 5 p.m.

"A great start to the season for this young team," said YHC head coach Mark McKeever.  "Hopefully we can use it to build some confidence and move forward.  We had great leadership from our senior players which was huge for us tonight."

Young Harris jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 8:46 mark. Jonny Denton served the ball in from the left corner at the top of the box into Macauley King at the far post who knocked it in the net. The Mountain Lions doubled their lead in the 34th minute as Tom Joslin followed his own missed shot that Saint Leo goalkeeper James White couldn't corral.

YHC, which held an 18-8 advantage on shots over the Lions, closed out the scored at the 88:53 mark on a penalty kick by Lewis Hilton after a Mountain Lion player was taken down in the box.

Jordan Bradshaw turned away three shots as the YHC goalkeeper earn his first shutout of the season. White stopped five for Saint Leo.
