Young Harris edged by Flagler 3-2

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Flagler College scored a late goal to defeat Young Harris College 3-2 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday (Sept. 26) evening at Saints Field.

The Saints improved to 3-1-1 overall and to 1-1-0 in the league while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-4-0 and 0-3-0. Young Harris, which has lost each by a goal this season, will step out of Peach Belt action for a 5:30 p.m. contest Tuesday (Sept. 29) when they host Erskine College at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

With the score knotted at 2 and looking like it was headed to overtime, Katie Reed took a pass across the top of the box from Makensie Danaher at the 88:00 mark and knocked the deciding goal in from the right side. Flagler had tied the match at 2 in the early moments of the second half on a Cassie Fernandez strike,

After Flagler took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on a Katie Kaim goal, the Mountain Lions equalized the match at the 6:01 mark. Amber Matthews sent the ball into the box to Emily Ober, who leads the team with four goals. After the Flagler goalkeeper came off her line, Ober deposited the ball into the right corner of the net.

Young Harris took a 2-1 lead midway through the opening half when Matthews head the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of 2015. The play was set up by Sydney Baird's direct kick from 25-yards out that careened off crossbar to Matthews in the middle of the box.

Young Harris took 12 shots in the match while goalkeeper Arielle Charles recorded nine saves for the Mountain Lions.
