LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Freshman
Mikie Rowe scored twice - including the match-winner – as Young Harris College rallied for a 3-2 non-conference men's soccer overtime win over the University of West Alabama Friday (Sept. 11) afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
The Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 3 in the NSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, improved to 3-0-0 while the Tigers slipped to 1-2-0. It was the second consecutive year the match between the two institutions went to overtime, with the Mountain Lions winning both times by 3-2 margins. Young Harris returns to action Sunday (Sept. 13) with a 2 p.m. match against Mars Hill University at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
With the score tied at 2 at the half, Young Harris, which outshot West Alabama 23-7, dominated play after intermission as they held a 13-3 advantage in shots, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Mountain Lions finally struck gold at the 96:20 mark as
Paco Craig fed the ball to Rowe in the box and Rowe knocked the ball into the right corner of the net.
"I'm very proud of this young team for digging deep when the going got tough," said YHC head coach
Mark McKeever. "It takes a lot of character with so many young lads to come from behind twice and win in OT."
West Alabama had taken a 1-0 lead at the 18:58 mark on a goal from Clay Green before Rowe tied it at 1 seven minutes later off an assist from
Josh Poole. The Tigers retook the lead 2-1 in the 31st minute on a Brian Meadows goal off a corner kick. However,
Lewis Hilton scored from 35 yards out off a direct kick at the 40:19 mark. It was Hilton's strike of the season.
Jordan Bradshaw stopped three shots in goal for the Mountain Lions while Brad Louis had eight saves for the Tigers.
