Mountain Lions ground Fleet with doubleheader sweep

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College swept both ends of a non-conference doubleheader from Erskine College by identical scores of 8-0 – both in five innings - Wednesday (April 8) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 26-12, one win shy of the program's NCAA-era total of 27, while Erskine fell to 14-20. Young Harris steps back to Peach Belt Conference action Friday (April 10) with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern State University. The doubleheader will be the Mountain Lions' Autism Awareness Day.

Young Harris jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning of the opener against Erskine starter Danica Newton (4-10). Stacia Williams doubled in two runs down the right field line before Murphy Davis drove in another on a grounder. Jeanie Perrucci added an RBI single to left before the reigning Peach Belt Player of the Week Chandler Stooksbury added a two-run single to right-center field.

The Mountain Lions closed out the game early as Sydnee Weaver stroked a two-run double through the left side in the third inning.

Perrucci, Stooksbury and Williams each collected two hits apiece for the Mountain Lions.

Starter Darby Stanford (16-4) only allowed one hit – a two-out single in the fourth to Sydney Smith – and struck out five in the complete-game effort.

The Mountain Lions converted six Erskine errors into six unearned runs in game two.

Williams had an RBI single through the left side off Erskine starter Karen Hawkins (3-5) as part of a three-run second that saw the Flying Fleet commit four errors. Sarah Magill led off the third with her 12th homer of the season, a towering shot to right field. YHC scored three times in the third inning as Erskine was guilty of two more miscues.

The Mountain Lions added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Perrucci had an RBI single to short in the fourth while Davis ended the game in the fifth with a run-scoring single to second base.

Perrucci (9-6) only surrendered two first inning hits to the Flying Fleet and struck out seven in the complete game. Perrucci retired 13 of the final 14 batters she faced.

Perrucci and Lyndsey York led the Mountain Lion offense with two hits each.
