YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College and Georgia College split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader Friday (April 24) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
Georgia College scored the first five runs in game one on its way to a 10-3 win while Young Harris used a four-run sixth inning in game two.
Young Harris ended its season at 15-30 overall and at 9-20 in the league while Georgia College fell to 27-16 and 13-11. The doubleheader was the final games for seniors Cody Ching, Justin Cooper, William Leatherwood and Spencer Thomas, who were honored prior to game one.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two on Jimmy Pinakidis' fielder's choice that scored Zach Wall, who started the inning with a single. The Mountain Lions pushed across another run on a Wall single an inning later to take a 2-0 lead off Georgia College starter Cameron Busby (2-3).
Georgia College got a run back on Logan Mattix's fifth-inning homer to left. Young Harris broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Michael Livingston drove home two runs with a single through the left side, while Thomas and Brett Westmoreland added run-scoring singles.
The Bobcats pulled within a run at 6-5 as they hit three homers in the eighth and ninth innings. Colton Montgomery had a solo homer in the eighth to left while Clay Ardeeser added a two-run homer to right in the ninth. Steve Hazel added a solo shot to right-center, but Donald Frew (3-4) notched his second complete game of the year as he got Mattix to fly out to end the game.
Four of the six hits Frew, who had seven strikeouts, surrendered were home runs.
Zach Odom and Westmoreland led the 13-hit Mountain Lion attack with three hits while Wall added two.
In the opener, Georgia College jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Young Harris got three runs back in the third. Odom singled down the right field line to drive in two runs and Wall added an RBI single.
The Bobcats, who had 17 hits, added a run in the seventh and four more an inning later to open up a 10-3 lead. Brandon Benson and Dylan Cook led Georgia College with four hits each while Benson and Ardeeser each drove in three runs.
Troy Kizer led the Mountain Lions with three hits while Odom and Wall had two hits apiece.
Jake Anthony (3-3) earned the win while Cooper (4-7) took the loss.
